Today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) presented its March 2025 Human Rights Dashboard, shedding light on critical developments on the state of human rights in Nigeria. The monthly dashboard serves as a vital tool in providing policy directive, as well as a comprehensive analysis of the most pressing human rights issues, and encouraging informed dialogue that drives meaningful action.
This month’s edition featured the issuance of an Advisory Opinion on the Protection of the Right to Freedom of Expression in Nigeria by Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of NHRC Nigeria. The Advisory opinion represents a crucial step in safeguarding one of the most fundamental freedoms in any democracy: the right to freely express thoughts, opinions, and ideas without fear of retribution or suppression.
Also underscored in the dashboard presentation were human rights violations stemming from the abuse of power by military and law enforcement agencies. These abuses undermine public trust, escalate tensions, and violate the fundamental rights of citizens. The NHRC calls for a commitment to human rights-based policing, training, and strict adherence to national and international standards in security operations.
We remain committed to working with all stakeholders, governments, civil society, and the international community to promote and protect the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.
